18 Dec ACA Update: January 1st Deadline Approaching

Are you ready for the January 1st changes?

It has been three years since Congress first passed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) – now referred to as the ACA – which was envisioned as a way to provide Americans with affordable, accessible health care and insurance coverage.

The ACA continues to present daily questions, challenges, and opportunities. We work with our clients one by one to determine what (if any) modifications they need to make to their wellness incentive strategy.

Are you ready for the January 1st changes?

  • Incentive differentials may not exceed 30% of the total cost of coverage offered – with a tobacco differential this can be increased to 50%. In other words, anything above 30% can only be tied to tobacco (for total of 50%).
  • Programs must include health improvement tools and resources for all your employees such as health coaching, Weight Watches at Work and walking programs. Be sure to have a go-to list of your offerings, disclose the necessary information to participants, and set them up for success.
  • Reasonable alternatives must be offered in order to provide all participants with an alternative way to meet a health-contingent, outcomes-based goal. A reasonable alternative can be progress or improvement-based goals or participation-based programs and must be tracked.
    • Do you have a smoking cessation program lined up? This is the only alternative available for tobacco/nicotine users.

So, are you ready?

If you need help or guidance, contact your sales lead or Client Account Manager, or you can email our corporate marketing team.  We’ll help determine whether your program is compliant.
